Frank Migliorelli and The Dirt Nappers', "Baby Put A Dress On" will be featured in BWH Music Group's 'THAT Summer by Various Artists'. We interviewed Frank about the song, the summer, and other fun things!
What song do you have featured on 'THAT SUMMER by Various Artists'? What is the song about and how do you think it fits into a project about the summer?
It's funny, but when you guys put out the call for tunes, this was my automatic first choice- I wrote it as a roll down the windows loud rock and roll tune that just had a nice driving groove to it.......This tune sounds MUCH better driving around on a hot summer night with the windows down than listening to it under a blanket by a warm fire....
We got that same vibe as soon as we heard it! Can you tell us a bit about how you wrote the song?
I just wanted to write something more upbeat and fun- something the band could open up a set with.....The idea of being all charged up to go out and see a band on a Friday night, dancing, jukebox, a few beers- all seemed to fit the vibe of rolling out for a summer night. Initially, I went out and played it solo acoustic a few times, just to put the toe in the water, and it go a great reaction- so I brought it to the band to work up. The did a killer job giving the tune a great vibe and texture-
So... what was the best summer of your life and why?!
Wow, I just love summer, any summer....it just puts me in a good mood- But I'd have to say, some of the summers I spent in Michigan when I was living out there were amazing - me and a buddy used to take these road trips- all over the state, and across the country- and just lived in the car for the moment....it was just a period of unbridled freedom.....
There are so many amazing artists on the compilation CD! Can you talk about a time in your career where you have collaborated with other artists and describe that experience for us?
I've been fortunate to collaborate as both a musician and a producer with other artists- it's hard to say what's a favorite. But the current line up of Dirt Nappers I'm playing with is a TOTAL blast- the feel, the creative input and the musicianship is nothing like I've had before, so I'm feeling pretty lucky right now....we're working on the next album already, so it's a pretty exciting time....
The compilation, "THAT SUMMER by Various Artists', is all about songs that have something positive or remind us of Summer in some way. With that in mind, can you tell us how making music has had a positive impact on your life?
I can't imagine not making music, that's why I keep doing it... it just what I do, and I think I'd probably be bored out of my skull if I couldn't make music. It beats the hell out of sitting around watching TV for sure....
Where do you live or work? What is the music scene like there? Is there anything special that goes on in June, July or August in your neck of the woods?!
Summer is an amazing time to be in NYC- there are tons of free shows- great shows in parks and street fairs throughout the summer- I've see Patti Smith at Lincoln Center, Joss Stone and the Cat Empire in Central Park, Garland Jeffreys in the Village, and too many others to name here- you just have to keep up and scour the listings, and you never have to pay for a ticket- New York has quite a few musical freebies if you keep your eyes open...
Describe your favorite vacation! Do you ever take a vacation or a break from writing, playing or performing music? Ha! Usually, when I go anywhere, I bring at least a Martin Backpacker guitar with me, so I don't really ever take a break- I'm miserable when I'm just sitting around- so if I know I'm going to be vacationing in a certain place, I'll look to see if there is a way to do a solo gig or even an open mic.....it is a great way to meet new people....
The music scene seems to be bursting with Summer Music Festivals. Do you have a favorite music festival that you play in or attend or is there one summer music festival you would love to play in?
I'm in New York- Not far from NYC, and right in the Hudson Valley- there are plenty of festivals to hit- Clearwater on the Hudson River is a big one, and usually they have a pretty good line up- Mountain Jam up in the Catskills is getting bigger and bigger-and I heard The War on Drugs is playing- wouldn't mine seeing them....I've been working on trying to get into some of the more regional, smaller events- I just heard about a unique festival called "Porchfest"- where this town sets up musicians on people's front porches and turns the whole town into a walking festival- I wouldn't mind getting in on that one- Looking beyond the Summer, what is on your radar for 2018-2019?
New album this fall, a mini-week long acoustic tour of a few pubs in Scotland with my bass player and guitar player in June, and I'm going to finally get off my butt and put out some kid's music- I used to write kids songs for video games- and I've had an idea in my head for years to get back to that- It's been something I've been meaning to do for a while-
