Skinny Fresh will be featured on BWH Music's Group anticipated release, 'THAT SUMMER by Various Artists' with his single, "All I Need" We interviewed Skinny Fresh about his song, the compilation project and more.
What song do you have featured on 'THAT SUMMER by Various Artists'? What is the song about and how do you think it fits into a project about the summer?
My featured song on "THAT SUMMER by Various Artists" is "All I Need" and was written on our European Tour with Delinquent Habits in spring. On one hand the song is about the things I want in life and on the other hand about the things I actually need. The song fits into this project because I also rap and sing about traveling the world, seeing different places and meeting different people, things one normally does in summer when being on vacation. But not just the lyrics, also the beat and the whole vibe of the song reflect these long awaited summer feelings we all know.
Can you tell us a bit about how you wrote the song?
My beat producer sent me this beat when I was on the Delinquent Habits album tour in Europe. I think it was in Vienna when we had a couple of days off and I started to write the song. The weather was great and you could smell that summer is knocking at the door. It kind of felt like I'm on vacation and I think together with the whole tour- and travel experience as such, that is what ultimately influenced my lyrics a lot. When I got home I recorded the song and my producer and I both knew that this song would be one of the singles on my upcoming album. Looking back, what was the best summer of your life and why?! I think the best summer of my life was when I went on an interrail trip with two of my best friends. We were about nineteen years old and traveled through Europe by train for three weeks straight living from day to day. We had a special train ticket that allowed us to take any train we wanted so we could spontaneously decide what city or country we wanted to go to next. Sometimes we had to sleep at the train-station, in the train or in the tent we brought along. I sure recommend this to anyone because we've met great people in places we didn't even know existed. There are so many amazing artists on the compilation CD! Can you talk about a time in your career where you have collaborated with other artists and describe that experience for us? I've always been down with collaborating with other artists, singers or producers because I really do think that it can help you develop and improve as an artist. My latest collaborations are the three songs I've recorded with Ives Irie of Delinquent Habits. Of course I benefited from these collaborations because he is way more known than I am. But what I really benefited from was getting an insight into his way of writing, recording and generally handling business. I believe any form of collaboration can be an asset for an artist, as long as he or she knows what to draw from it.
The compilation, "THAT SUMMER by Various Artists', is all about songs that have something positive or remind us of Summer in some way. With that in mind, can you tell us how making music has had a positive impact on your life?
As far as I can remember, music had always been an important part of my life. When I started to write songs at the age of eleven, it grew even more on importance. It sounds cheesy but rap was the only thing I always could turn to. Making music doesn't just bring me through my lows but also makes my highs better than they are already. I'm forever grateful for this gift.
Where do you live or work? What is the music scene like there? Is there anything special that goes on in June, July or August in your neck of the woods?!
I live in Basel City (Switzerland) and study history and sociology in my MA. Furthermore, I work at the harbor in a dispatch department. Basel used to be the swiss stronghold of hip hop in the 90's but now the electronic music scene took over completely. Nevertheless, we have a distinct underground music scene in Switzerland and a lot of very talented artists and bands. In June, July and August it's festival season in Switzerland and famous festivals like Open Air Frauenfeld, Royal Arena or Rock Am Ring for example sure are worth a visit.
Describe your favorite vacation! Do you ever take a vacation or a break from writing, playing or performing music?
I rarely take vacation and if I do then it is always somehow connected to music. Even though being on tour for example is very exhausting, I think that this is actually my favorite type of vacation. I like the beach in the summer and the mountains in the winter but even if I happen to do go on vacation to actually take a break, I still write music and rap. Music is always a part of my breaks, be it during the day at lunch or on vacation.
The music scene seems to be bursting with Summer Music Festivals. Do you have a favorite music festival that you play in or attend or is there one summer music festival you would love to play in?
Referring to my answer of question six, I would really love to play at the Royal Arena or Open Air Frauenfeld. While Frauenfeld is the biggest and most famous Hip Hop festival in Europe, Royal Arena is smaller and way more familial, which I like. Plus Royal Arena's diverse mix of mainstream and underground Artists is what makes me want to go there every single year.
Looking beyond the Summer, what is on your radar for 2018-2019?
In summer 2018 I want to get working on my next album. I've already written a couple of songs and the concept of the project is almost worked out completely. My goal is to keep creating buzz and hopefully I will play at one of these summer festivals in 2019.
