Coastal Club - 'Make It by'
Coastal Club is an Indie pop group from Cincinnati, Ohio. The group was formed in 2017 by a group of friends looking to blend modern indie rock with pop while adding a hint of surf music along the way. The group finds its center with slightly modulated guitar lines, dreamy synths, and tight drum grooves layered with fun, care-free lyrics about enjoying every aspect of life. The group’s favorite pastimes include long walks by the Ohio River shore and post-concert milkshakes.
10 QUESTIONS caught up with Coastal Club about the upcoming BWH Music Group's compilation project, 'THAT SUMMER by Various Artists'.
What song do you have featured on 'THAT SUMMER by Various Artists'? What is the song about and how do you think it fits into a project about the summer?
We have "Make It By" featured on this compilation. We believe that our pop-inspired surf rock lends itself well to warm temperatures and long drives.
Can you tell us a bit about how you wrote the song?
This is actually one of our oldest songs. The idea came into existence while I (Alex Hirlinger) was just messing around on acoustic guitar in a dropped tuning. When we first got together to work on some of these songs we naturally began to add some "surf-rock" elements, which ended up dictating a lot of our overall sound.
Looking back, what was the best summer of your life and why?
The best summer of my life (Alex Hirlinger) was probably two summers ago. I went on so many camping trips, I was living with a few of my best friends and I was just beginning a new relationship with the girl that I am currently dating. We were living in an old, terrible apartment in Clifton, Cincinnati, but we loved it so much and we had the best time in that place. The best part about that apartment: rooftop access and rooftop beers (please don't tell the landlord or the cops).
There are so many amazing artists on the compilation CD! Can you talk about a time in your career where you have collaborated with other artists and describe that experience for us?
As an artist, I believe on of the most important things to do is collaborate. Without collaboration, you get narrow-minded and less objective with your creative decisions. That is why it is crucial to always be bringing new people into the creative process. Personally, I have played and co-written with a variety of artists outside of Coastal Club, such as Jane Decker, Moonbeau, Mike Mains and the Branches, and Seabird.
The compilation, "THAT SUMMER by Various Artists', is all about songs that have something positive or remind us of Summer in some way. With that in mind, can you tell us how making music has had a positive impact on your life?
The most impactful way that music has changed my life has been through connections and meeting new people. It is so incredible to be able to play music with other artists and meet new fans/friends at shows. There is a genuine connection and shared love for music that occurs that is both inspiring and fulfilling. That's really what I think music does best - bring people together.
Where do you live or work? What is the music scene like there? Is there anything special that goes on in June, July or August in your neck of the woods?!
We are based out of Cincinnati, and that is where we all live and work and the music scene is pretty incredible, honestly. There are so many great bands and we have a variety of music festivals in the summer, as well as concert series at a variety of downtown parks and event centers. We love being involved in the growing scene here and being a part of this incredible community of artists.
Describe your favorite vacation! Do you ever take a vacation or a break from writing, playing or performing music?
My favorite vacation occurred last year when I went hiking to Norway. Outside of music, I really enjoy hiking and camping or anything that allows me to be outside. Whenever I am not working on music, I am generally outside or trying to get outside.
The music scene seems to be bursting with Summer Music Festivals. Do you have a favorite music festival that you play in or attend or is there one summer music festival you would love to play in?
Last year, we played Midpoint Music Festival, which was such a blast. We are also playing at Cincinnati's Fountain Square Concert Series, which we are so excited about. We love music festivals, and we'd love to eventually be a part of festivals like south by and lollapalooza. Looking beyond the Summer, what is on your radar for 2018-2019?
We are working on some new tunes that we are so so excited about. This next release will obviously consist of a lot more summer jams. Our hope is to release these songs either in late 2018 or early 2019.
