What is"Ease My Mind" about and how do you think it fits into a project about the summer?
Its an upbeat, pop-inspired song, showcasing both the sweet and spiteful that come with love. The hook, sung by my friend and collaborator Chris Chand, sings longingly about a lover, while my verses provide a more stark recollection of past relationships. I think we can all agree that summer is a time of heedless, fiery, regrettable romance. Its so easy to get carried away... but winter always comes around.
Can you tell us a bit about how you wrote the song?
This song was written incredibly naturally; from start to finish, it only took us a couple hours to get the track at a solid first draft. When I heard the hook that Chris had come up with, I instantly recognized how he was feeling - clearly missing someone's daughter. This got me thinking about the girls that had made me feel that way... and before I knew it, my writing was basically trying to convince him not to fall too deep, by providing examples of my own heartbreak. Ease My Mind was by far one of the most authentically written songs off of my latest project.
Looking back, what was the best summer of your life and why?!
Summer's definitely my season. The rest of the year is spent waiting for it. That being said, I think that summer '16 was probably my best. I had just gotten a stereo in my car. "Views" was fresh on the radio. I was seeing the girl I'd chased all of high-school. Bonfires with friends. Late nights with acquaintances. Exploring. Learning. Drinking. Laughing. Real, classic summer.
There are so many amazing artists on the compilation CD! Can you talk about a time in your career where you have collaborated with other artists and describe that experience for us?
Well, "Ease My Mind" itself was a result of an incredible collaboration with my good friend Chris Chand. It was our first time working together as musicians. He had showed up, tuned his guitar, and within a couple minutes we were deep into it. Writing back and forth, bouncing ideas, playing around, everything. The creative process was so natural and smooth, and allowed for a real genuine product in the end.
The other feature I had on my latest project, was a female singer/rapper named Kholor. She hopped on "Last Night", a drum heavy, rhythmic, atmospheric journey - and absolutely KILLED her verse. I'm really particular about who I make music with, so to have a female rapper come and show up like that was amazing for me. Both those features were some of my favorite moments on my album, and I cant wait to keep working with new people.
'The compilation, "THAT SUMMER by Various Artists', is all about songs that have something positive or remind us of Summer in some way. With that in mind, can you tell us how making music has had a positive impact on your life?
As a kid who grew up in some questionable areas, I had a lot of paths I could've gone down. A lot of friends on less noble pursuits. Music gave me a straight road.
Where do you live or work? What is the music scene like there? Is there anything special that goes on in June, July or August in your neck of the woods?!
I live and work just east of Toronto, Canada. There's a LOT going on here - OVO Fest, Veld, Boots 'n Hearts; there are festivals for everyone in the coming months, and all of them are lined to the brim with talent.
The music scene seems to be bursting with Summer Music Festivals. Do you have a favorite music festival that you play in or attend or is there one summer music festival you would love to play in?
While OVO Fest is the obvious goal for any Toronto artist - I'd love to play Veld. Something about that high-paced, open hearted environment just calls to me. I can imagine it - being on top of that stage, in front of tens of thousands in a field, mammoth speakers blaring something fast. Beauty.
Looking beyond the Summer, what is on your radar for 2018-2019?
