Above the Skyline

Above the Skyline is a killer 5 piece rock band out of Miami Florida featuring Sierra Karr (lead vocals), Zach Wood (lead vocals, keyboard), Eric Green (guitar), Chloe Santiago (drums), and Alec Enriquez (bass). The group started in late 2013 and have been delivering top-notch dynamic songs since. With a style that varies from song to song, Above (Photo Credit: Kalopsianvision)

the Skyline can go from delicate ballads to hard hitting rock jams with the flip of a switch. You won’t want to miss out on their music so make sure to check out their most recent project Fall Right Into Place.

Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.

Each one of us can give a different answer I’m sure, but what drives us all is a true love and passion for making music. We all have our side jobs and other “safe” careers we’re working towards. But really none of us can see ourselves doing anything else but music. The catalyst is the passion, really almost the fear of not having music in our lives pushes us more.

Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?

Definitely playing at the famous House Of Blues in Orlando this past June. The crowd was jam packed, they were engaged in every song and they were amazing. After we performed we signed autographs on shirts, took pictures, and made connections with fans whom we hope to keep for a long time. It’s humbling but it was such an incredible high, something we want more of.

So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?

Our process is as simple as someone bringing in a chord progression and us working through it to create something. Sierra and I write the lyrics while the whole band brings their own flavor to the song. It’s collaborative! Meaning that we may throw objects at each other when we don’t agree haha but nonetheless... we work together

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?

The biggest challenge is and always will be getting our name out there. There’s so many greats artists, great bands that don’t get noticed on a daily basis. You have to find your niche, find out where you fit in this crazy world, and once you do you go all out. I wouldn’t ask the music industry to change anything really because it’s not supposed to easy to make it. We as artists just need to find a way to stand out, and I feel like with our diversity and music style, we do that.

If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?

I’m sure every person in the band would give a different answer to this one too! I’m gonna do my best to speak for them. Eric would say Avenged Sevenfold or Guns n Roses; Alec would say Sublime or Jaco Pastorius; Sierra would say someone from Broadway, and Chloe would say Logic. Me myself, I would say Jack White or Stevie Wonder. Now you see the reason why our styles vary!

What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?

It’s hot, sweaty, smelly, and worth it. We practice in my garage in the humid Florida weather and we go as hard as we can until we are on the verge of passing out! But we work hard, always preparing for a show or new music, we just have to throw in some breaks in between for some water.

Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!

Lyrically for me, the song on our latest album called “Aegis” was extremely challenging. It’s a song for my girlfriend but I wrote it as if I was writing a letter to my mother who passed away from at cancer in 2014. My mother never met my girlfriend because we started dating in 2016 so the letter I’m writing to my mom in this song is me telling her that she’s never met her but I promise that she would’ve loved to. It’s very personal and dear to me, and that emotional attachment made it hard for me to be satisfied with it. But luckily, people seem to like it, it’s our highest played song on Spotify!

What's coming up in the future?

We want to tour as much as we can and continue to expand our fan base past South Florida. Along with that, new videos and music are always on the horizon for us! We’re always putting out fresh content on our social medias.

Tell us where fans can access your music.
