Hailing from Tulsa Oklahoma, 3Mind Blight came out of the late 90's Boom Bap Rap and Grunge Rock scene. After leading several bands and production teams, what started as a hobby became a full-time music career in production, instrumentation, and artistry. 3Mind Blight combines elements of Rap/Hip-Hop and Rock; he also sings, writes and produces for a rock project called DeadEyeChokeHold. 3Mind Blight is a featured artist on National Indie Radio (WNIR)
Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
One day my brother switched out all of my Rap CD's for Rock CD's...So I got a guitar and learned how to play many of the Rock songs and would play and sing to him while he tried to sleep. At the time it felt like a good way to get back at him, but in the process I found out I enjoyed blending the genre's. This lead to my love of creating and producing music in many styles.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
There have been so many weird and crazy things that have happened. It would be hard to pick just one to discuss. That being said....most of the stories aren't appropriate to tell anyway.
What has been the high point of your music path?
Starting 3MIND BLIGHT MUSIC LABEL and learning how to run the business and produce all of the music the way I heard it in my head. It's nice to be able to create what you want without having someone standing there telling you what you can and can't do or what you need to change.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I create all of my music based on a feeling or an emotion. I just go with the flow and make the music fit my mood at the time. If something inspires me....I write about it and then make music to go with what I wrote.
Let's take a minute to check out the video of "A Good Life":
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
Gaining new fans. Keeping old fans and making enough music to stay relevant in an over-saturated industry. It would be nice to get into Playlist's,Blog's,Shows etc. based on merit and the quality of the music and not just by being on a certain Label. There are a lot of indie bands out there that are just as good if not better than the Artist's on Major Label's ...Yet they get passed on to bring in an Artist backed by the industry.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why? Rap Stage - Eminem.. I love the wit and raw energy. Rock - Alice in Chainswith Layne Staley. I never got the chance to see them play before he passed and I have always regretted it
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show? As of late I have been focused on the digital realm so most of my rehearsals are in the studio. I haven't done any live shows for a while.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
Paranoia. I wrote the song over ten years ago and it has been a Rock song, a Rap song and every genre in between. It has gone through so many changes. It just never felt right or complete. In 2018, I sat down to record another song over a beat I had just created that day...but I heard new lyrics etc. and Paranoia came to mind so I rewrote all of it and made the final version that day. And here's a video of "I Am Not"
What's coming up in the future?
I am expanding my music into Film and TV.....and I am in the process of writing and making the music for at least six new songs for 3Mind Blight and I have four scheduled this year for DeadEyeChokeHold. That is if I can find the time to sing and record everything needed for the releases.
