Almost An Artist
Almost An Artist, is the fruit of Julian Cassia, who is "sort of from England, sort of from Lebanon and very much, sort of, from France." He lives and works in the U.S. and in Canada, between Toronto and NYC. Almost An Artist is a film composer, independent recording artist and a multi-instrumentalist. He plays everything in the kitchen sink including guitar, drums, percussion, keyboards, clarinet and the GuitarViol (a one-of-a-kind hybrid that closely resembles a violin in timbre). His versatile sound combines electronic music and multiple genres (indie-rock, country, pop, and more).
As a film composer, Julian has worked on several award-winning films: "The Traveler" (2016) and "Man with Van" (2017). Julian holds a dual degree from the Berklee College of Music in Music Synthesis and Film Scoring, as well as a Master's in Composition from NYU.
Almost An Artist is one of the featured artists on BWH Music Group's upcoming album, Keepin' It Country.
What is the name of the song you have on ‘Keepin’ It Country, Vol. One’?
What is the inspiration behind your song? Or what is your song about?
So this is a song I wrote for a bar scene in a film I was scoring. I dived into the song from the memory of a woman who I had met, who was intoxicating, and I found impossible to turn away from. She knew it, and I knew it too, but had no recourse to rational. I fell into a madness, practically, despite a voice in the back of my mind, telling me this would lead to nowhere else but disaster. It's a song about a problematic, schematic in the human mind.
How did you write your featured song? Or can you describe your songwriting process?
Honestly, I can't remember. I had a spec to write a country song, and I just went for it. I went with a train beat, quintessentially country, and then overlaid some guitar riffs that I found cool. I then sat down, and tried to piece together something I felt was authentic, that I had lived, lyrically, and I went from there.
If you could share the stage with one Country artist, who would it be?! Soggy Bottom Boys
Who or what has inspired you the most in your music career?
Amongst the very few; The Beatles, Mozart, Debussy, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Wes Montgomery, Depeche Mode, Django Reinhardt, Serge Gainsbourg, Soap Kills, Blur, dEUS, The Cardigans, Kraftwerk, Soggy Bottoms Boys, Hendrix, Chairlift, Royksopp, Michael Andrews, Jon Biron ... pff ... and so many more ...
How did you first get introduced to Country music? Or what made you decide to pursue Country music? Country music was a far distant thing from where I grew up in Europe and in the Middle East. I suppose I got into it whilst working on films that required country music. I just dug the tones of the instruments ... all styles are great, if they start with a really well written song.
Of the songs you have written, which one was the most challenging to write and why? I'm currently writing a song which I have been writing over 20 years. I think I've finally cracked it ... It was a challenge because each incarnation of the song I wrote, I did not connect to it. That, has been one of the most painful things I've lived, not because of the sharpness of the pain, but because it incessantly nags at you, that there's something there in the song that can work, but you can't figure it out, and you can't shut the thought out. Like an endless headbuzz that doesn't leave you alone ... perhaps calling it "pain" is a bit hyperbolic, but it certainly is a pain in the rump.
Where do you live and how is the Country music scene there!? Toronto ... I recently moved from New York though. The country scene in New York is alive, and the country scene in Toronto, also is alive. Though here, it's drizzled in Maple Syrup.
So, what’s coming up in the future? Scoring films, commercials, writing songs, teaching, and I am working on a batch of tracks for my niece, who goes by the name "Japan, Man."
