Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
Alongside performing music, growing up, I played soccer every weekend. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL and meniscus my junior year of high school, which ended my soccer dreams but really ignited my love for music! At a school performance senior year, I met my producer, Mark Vogel, and I have been working with him on my new EP ever since!
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
The craziest thing that has happened to me so far is that one of my singles, "Make Me Wanna," is going to be in a feature film (Easter Bloody Easter - out next April)! When I heard this news, I was beyond excited and appreciative for the opportunity! It felt like my hard work was really being seen by others, and it felt all worth it!
What has been the high point of your music path?
One of the high points of my music path has to be shooting the music video for my single, "Make Me Wanna." It was my first experience with a director and full film crew which was intimidating at first, but it ended up being one of the best days of my life. I was so happy that it was not only so professionally done by film maker Diane Foster, but that some of my friends were able to be apart of it as well! You can find it on my YouTube channel, and my website anikasworld.com!
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?:
I am constantly writing little lyrics down, and when I'm ready to create my next song, I take a look at all of the thoughts and emotions I have written down and try to find a cohesive theme or idea. Once I have that, I will think of beats and melodies that I like to accompany those ideas, then my producer and I refine and build from there.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would you change?
I think today, social media is one of the biggest aspects challenging Indie Artists. A lot of times, people won't listen to you or won't accept your credibility if you don't have "enough" followers. I know there are so many amazing artists out there who are overlooked because of this aspect alone. Should success be more about self-promotion or quality of the music? It becomes difficult to separate the two at times.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why? That artist, for me, would definitely be Freddie Mercury. He is a musical and vocal genius, and it would be so amazing if I had the chance to learn even a little bit about his wisdom and talent firsthand. Queen was and still is so successful. The way that they pushed boundaries and took risks without fear is truly inspiring to me. I hope one day to be as fearless and confident in my musical ability as Freddie and the members of Queen.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
Growing up I did recitals which always included covers but I haven't gotten the chance to perform any of my own songs live yet. With the release of my first EP, live shows will follow very soon, so stay tuned!
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
On my new EP, I would say the hardest song to write was "Dancing In The Rain" because it is just so emotional. I was going through an extremely difficult period, and it is hard to find the right words to express those feelings along with creating a melody that doesn't feel forced.
What's coming up in the future?
I have my first EP, "Anika," coming out August 4th! I have been working on this for over two years, so I am extremely excited to be finally putting it out into the world!
