Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
Hmmm, I never thought about it this way, but I guess the pandemic lockdown was the trigger. My first EP was released in late 2020, and 2 of the songs on the EP are about my own vision of the world at that time. I pretty much poured all the anxiety, fear, and frustration I was feeling during the pandemic in my single “Sad”. I was only 12 years old when I released my first EP, Colors, and being isolated and away from my friends changed my life completely. Writing about it was my way of coping with all of it. As life began to feel more normal, my focus also changed. I started writing about love and the good things in my life.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
The craziest thing was probably the fact that I was offered a record deal when I was 10 years old. After months and months of trials and proving my talent, I was offered a 360 deal that was locking me in a contract for the next 10 years. My parents respectfully declined the offer and decided to help me develop as an independent artist until the time is right.
What has been the high point of your music path?
I am 14 years old, and I feel like my journey is only just now starting. I have very specific goals and dreams, but I know it takes time. One of my dreams was to have my music videos on the major TV channels, and this week that dream came true. My latest single, “Sunflower” is now on rotation on MTV Spankin’ New.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I love being in my room, late at night, just me and a piano, a lot of ideas are born this way. But most of my songs are finalized in the studio with the help of my amazing team. I love spending time in the studio with other musicians and co-creating.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
I think one of the biggest challenges is the overall sound of Indie Artists. I feel like a lot of the music sounds similar and it's difficult to differentiate between artists. One of my biggest focuses is to develop my own unique sound and style.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
There are so many artists I admire, and I would love to collaborate with. If I have to choose just one, it would be Tyler the Creator. I have been to some of his concerts, and he is just dope. I love his music and his creativity. I admire the fact that he produces all his music. Not to mention that he is hilarious, I think being on stage with him would be super fun.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I like to go out and play with a band behind me, but it all depends on the gig. For smaller venues I keep it more intimate, just a guitar and me. I have a few sets that I have been working on for the past year or so, but the sets keep on growing as I write new music.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
I think Colors was the hardest song I ever wrote. It was also the first song I ever wrote, and I had a lot of doubt in my own abilities as a songwriter. It took a lot of encouragement and validation from the people around me to finalize this song.
What's coming up in the future?
Many things are coming up. I have two new songs that will be released this summer. I am preparing many live shows, I honestly just want to be out and connect with people directly. My focus is to work on an album release sometimes in 2023.
