Gabe G. - 10 Questions Interview
Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
I went away for the summer of 7th grade to stay with a cousin who introduced me to the process of recording music over instrumentals. He tried to get me and his brother to record, however I was the one who stood out to him.
But I really knew I wanted to make music when I went back home after summer ended and my 2 best friends Ryan and Deontae were also recording and rapping. Everything seemed to align. That was the moment I wanted to write hit songs.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
My very first show was a paid show with my favorite rap group at the time, the Cool Kids. I had one Album out and it had brought me so much success; it felt surreal to meet and perform for the Cool Kids.
What has been the high point of your music path?
The high point of my music path is happening right now.
There was a time after my 4th project, after my baby, that I felt my passion for music dying. My songs became harder to record. I was losing the support of my friends and family.
Then in 2018, an old time friend and I relinked up; I changed my environment and began making the best music of my life. Tbh, I didn't realize I was having a low until I was out of it.
Awareness was gained and was much needed.
So, how do you approach songwriting, or what is your creative process like?
Well, I make beats now so my process has changed. I used to find beats on YouTube and just write music based on the vibe the beats gave me. Now I make the beats, based on my mood, and the words follow after.
When I'm writing songs I normally just hum and mumble harmonies and melodies that come to my subconscious until they are filled in with words.
I try not to think too hard. Works every time!
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
The biggest challenge I face is keeping up with all these different platforms. There are so many ways to get your music nowadays and no one wants to leave listeners and new fans on the table. Also, think the business has become more of a popularity contest as opposed to being about the music, but I envision that changing very soon.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
Drake is my gauge of success, another contributor to why I rap.
I moved away from my friends who I started music with after 7th grade to a new place with no friends and a totally different environment, a less creatively diverse place called Rockford, where a lot of things were the same, and a lot of ppl liked the same shit, and if you didn't you were a weirdo.
Well, I watched Degrassi, and watching Drake be this cool rapper in a wheel chair made me feel a sense of inspiration. so after a year of no music recording no desire to make music, I started recording music again in 9th grade because of Drake. Performing with him affirms that my imagination can always come into fruition - Cant wait to share the stage with Drake one day.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I just pray/meditate and listen to my set all day.
Tunnel vision, I try to exercise every day and eat light high energy food before my shoes.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
All my songs a written by Divine guidance.
The hardest songs for me to write are the ones that aren't about my life or experiences.
What's coming up in the future?
Lots and lots of music, A Scrape Haus Movie that will be released at end of 2022. Lots of traveling and more epic videos.
Tell us where fans can access your music?
