Heri Iznaga

Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.

I used to be somewhat lonely and living in a very isolated farmhouse with my grandmother where the closest and smallest town was 40 minutes away. I received a DVD containing all live performances and songs by Michael Jackson and I was so fascinated by the art, the dance and the music that I still remember thinking to myself " I wanna do this when I grow up" It's like if my soul had found it's true purpose. I was always drawn into arts as a kid, first it was drawing, then dancing and now music.

Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?

When I booked a trip to Iceland and travelled the ring road by myself to have the chance to film my first music video for "Dancing In the Mirror" This was back in 2019, I knew I wanted to do something different, something that not a lot of people would actually dare to do. Go to a foreign country very very far away from home by yourself to film a music video and have all these different crazy adventures like snowmobiling on a glacier, seeing the northern lights for the first time! It was really life changing for me. An experience that 100% shaped the person I am today. Looking back I am very glad I got to do it and I will forever cherish that moment.

What has been the high point of your music path?

This year 2021 has been so great for me. I have been developing and crafting my sound more and more and the artistic growth I have seen for myself it's outstanding, very different from the person I was on 2020. Because of it, I received tons of DM's from fans saying how my music has helped them heal in one way or another. I never truly grasped the concept of it till I started putting my music out, at the end of the day that is what is all about. We live our experiences and transform that knowledge into art, and the fact that I can touch and inspire people that way that's how I know I'm doing my job right.

So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?

It really depends on my state of mind. But usually I start with the instrumental first, I lay down basic chords and experiment to see if I can get a decent sounding structure. If I like what I hear then I continue creating and crafting the sounds until I have something that I can work with. Only then, is when I start humming gibberish melodies for each section of the song and the lyrics follow. I like to write my lyrics depending on what I am feeling at the moment, if there is something i been thinking about or something I wanna get off my chest then I write the song based on that, sometimes I also write the lyrics according to the vibes that I get from the instrumental, it is actually the most important component to start with first in my opinion.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?

I truly think that independent artists actually have many more ways to have their music heard than ver before. The times of the gatekeepers are done, you can have your music reach thousands of people on TikTok and experience massive growth, that was never possible 10 years ago. However, I do agree the music industry can be very tough to go through, but is something that is manageable and if this is your true passion then rest assured nothing will ever stop you.

If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?

That would have to be Ariana Grande. I just love her, I think she is one of the most talented female vocalists and musicians of our generation. I would be so honored and I'm looking forward to share the stage with her at least once, and probably a song or two. I will be manifesting that into reality haha.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?

Well, I am not really performing or doing any live shows at the moment. I am so focused on my music and producing that I would have put that aside. However, when I do have to perform live then is just me practicing in my bedroom going along with the instrumental track. I am hoping I can get things done to eventually focus on performing live, that'd be great.

Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!

It would have to be an unreleased song. I recently started working on it but for some reason I keep making edits and I haven't been able to find that perfect melody for the chorus, everything else is written and vocals have been tracked but is just that chorus melody that does not let me sleep at night. I know eventually I will channel the the right melody, there's gotta be something missing or something I must get done in order to come up with the top line that fits best.

What's coming up in the future?

Definetely more and more music and hopefully more music videos. I have struggeled quite a little bit to find the perfect music video theme for my newest songs so I decided to just not do one at the moment, definitely not the right move considering the fact my fans have been asking me for one but... I will, I promise.
