Kay Soul - 10 Questions Interview
Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
Music has always been an important part of my life. It was the one thing that always felt real to me. At a young age, music became my outlet to express my feelings and deal with my emotions.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
Being blessed with the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at an NBA game. It was a scary and amazing experience all at the same time.
What has been the high point of your music path?
I was recently signed to One Nation Under God Records which is based in Atlanta, GA. I'm really excited to finally have some serious support behind my music to help me take it to the next level.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
My process is very free flowing. I like to visualize that story I'm telling with each track then sit down and record whatever comes to my mind first as far as lyrics and melodies. I continue to build from there.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
I think a lot of Indie Artists face financial challenges which can hamper their ability to finish projects or have a budget for a good promotional campaign. There usually isn't a platform for India Artists to get major exposure without having an "Inside connection". I think the major labels, award shows, etc. should start including more opportunities catered towards independent artists.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
There are so many great artists but my dream collaboration would be with Lauryn Hill. She made it ok to rap and sing and be conscious and uplifting while still being fly, cool, and feminine.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I work by the motto that you rehearse how you want to perform so my rehearsals are usually a full run through of all songs and working out any new transitions or live song arrangements. I always like to get in at least 3 to 4 rehearsals before major shows if possible. I look forward to the day when I will have shows that require months of preparation. I'm in love with the process as much as the actual performance.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
I believe that all my songs come with their own challenges. My most recent single "Strong Connection" challenged me to channel emotions to sing about the type of love I've always wanted but not sure that I've ever really had.
What's coming up in the future?
I will be releasing a new EP entitled "Connections" which is a companion project to my last album "In My Mind". It will include 5 new songs that examine the connections we have with ourselves and others. I will also be announcing some major performance dates in the very near future where I will be presenting all my new music with a fresh new band and stage show.
