Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
I was struggling alot with mixed emotions being diagnosed bipolar and depression was really messing with my head. I found music as a median at the time to express these emotions and manic episodes. After several years of honing my craft I got to where I am now, with the promise to myself that "I am the sh*t and I'm going all the way with this."
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
Coming from giving up around a year ago, to where I am at today, and then ever more so where I will be at tomorrow.
What has been the high point of your music path?
A lot of my personal idols started reaching out and congratulating me, giving me advice and all that. Sure I've hit numbers and reached goals, but the things I've learned is what is gonna get me to that next step.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I keep a notebook full of emotions or events I need to speak about. I then sit back and find a beat that matches the emotions of something in the notebook. After that I just let the music create itself. Sometimes I can finish a song in 5 to 10 minutes, while never touching a piece of paper. Other times I make sure to articulate my message properly and really take my time with a song, sometimes up to weeks.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
There seems to be a wall, but not an impenetrable one at that. This wall really separates the passionate from the weak. In order to make it, you got to grind for years. You can't be into music for the money or everything with that. In order for your "fire" to keep burning, the passion needs to be there. I just realized this myself, and since rearranging my mindset and my focuses, I've started to find newfound success.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
Apollo!, a very talented and star-bound artist out of DC. His music is incredible and I had the chance to room with him this year at UW Madison. We ended up becoming very close friends, and I am forever in debt for the knowledge and willpower this man has given me. So, if I'm gonna make it in this game, then I want him right there with me aswell.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I don't get nervous, this feels like its a part of me. I just lose myself on stage and have a fun*ss time.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
Freestyle off my new EP "Only Can Make It." That song took everything out of me at the time, and I was trying to find light at my lowest of lows. It ended up being described by planetsinger as, "'Freestyle' with the elegant base and catchy rhythm is probably one of the best Hip-Hop tracks of 2020 so far."
What's coming up in the future?
I'm a big believer in manifestation, but only when it's backed up by tireless planning and effort. I get up earlier then everyone else and I go to bed later then everyone as well, this is all just because I know I can make it and I know what I need to do. And even when I reach these goals I got new ones planned for after that. I ain't ever stopping and this is just the beginning. Follow me on Instagram to stay up to date at 'ldthekid'.
