Rockey Washington - 10 Questions Music Interview
Updated: Jul 1
Hailing from the city of danger and beauty, Saint Louis, Rockey Washington is a talented recording artist and rising star in the international hip hop music scene. Rockey released his debut single “Tsunami Season”(2019) to rave reviews and enthusiastic fans. Inspired by his drummer father and legends like Kanye West and Drake, Rockey started rapping and performing at the young age of 15. Although his heart generously beats for hip hop music, his love for other genres can be heard in his fresh and creative sound. Rockey's latest project “Pandemic” is inspired by the ongoing Covid-19 scare and quarantine. The album was written, produced, and mixed (under quarantine) in Los Angeles. Combining hard-hitting, yet smooth flowing, vocals with immaculate songwriting skills, Rockey Washington is making his mark in the music industry.
Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.
My dad being a drummer STARTED all of it. The timing, the melodies, the cadences. that's how I created such a unique style. There's other people and components, but yea pops started it all.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
IDK , not too many "crazy" things have happened in my music life. Not crazy or bad like wild or something...nah... Maybe in my regular life more often lol.
What has been the high point of your music path?
Being brought over seas (pre-Covid). A house artist in Berlin saw my music and without knowing me or anything brought me there, and we toured a few countries. Made a bunch of music and money. Him bringing me there was my first time there. It was lit! Now his whole community of djs hit me with music. I just send like chants and yea yeas! They love it! Me too!
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
It's about the music for me. I listen to hundreds of beats a day..like for real! every day. different producers. If the beat stops me and makes me start free styling to myself, Its a song for me. I also make beats but I be vibing so much I like having other peoples input and not everything being all me (like me rapping me producing me mixing me everything lol). I like getting on a vibe that I didn't make and doing what I do on it!
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
There are really no outlets. Everybody says "the internet, the internet. You can do it all yourself". But in reality any platform that allows that, quickly doesn't anymore. Gets in with the labels or whatever but then its not about indie anymore. I really want to start something for really dope indie artist of any genre!
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
God...because he made music.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I practice everyday. Just like eating or exercising or rolling up girl scout cookies. Everyday!
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
Not in a prideful way. But sincerely, writing isn't ever a challenge for me. If i feel the music. The words are coming.
What's coming up in the future?
Projects every 3 months. A joint project with me and my lil bro. The project is called Alien technology. On a "watch the throne" type of vibe and it will be streaming soon too. Like July 4th. Everything for that will be just called Alien Technology. None of our names or anything on it. Like a super group lol. In September I am releasing another solo project named "Vaccine." Kind of like an answer to my most recent release (6/5/20) "Pandemic". Just keep making music and visuals man! Keep working that's all!
