Skip from Almost July - 10 Questions Interview

New York-based band Almost July is the creation of Skip Glogan. Skip writes, produces and arranges all of their songs. Their live show has Skip playing keys and fronting the band with a combination of live instruments, samples, and electronics created in Ableton Live. The band is completed by New York mainstay Derek Broomhead (drums, drum pads). Almost July has made their mark at iconic NYC venues Rockwood Music Hall and The Delancey.

Get to know Skip and Almost July through 10 intriguing questions.

Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music? Tell us about it.

Not specifically, but even when I was a little kid I desperately always wanted to write songs.

Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?

Maybe not the craziest night we ever had but definitely one of the most exiting was the first time we heard someone was gonna play one of our songs on the radio, we got so hyped and ended up partying really late that night; it will always be a favorite memory.

What has been the high point of your music path?

Getting to meet so many awesome people, making new friends, and seeing so many different places I never would have seen without being in music.

So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?

We usually start by sharing stories from however long ago, then that turns into a few different topics (even if they have nothing to do with the original story) and from those topics we start writing lyrics and coming up with a few music ideas.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?

I think the biggest challenge everybody has to face is that there's so much great music out in the world already, its pretty tough to find your own place in all of it but that being said, having a lot of great music out is definitely something I would not want to change.

If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?

Probably a band called "Nightly" we think their music is awesome; would love to share the stage with them.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?

A lot of going over the same songs 1000 times until we're happy with how it sounds and looks.

Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!

Out of the few new ones we released, it's probably "Young" because the story that started the song came from, thinking about someone very very close to me who passed away and as we went further into writing it, it started turning into more of a nostalgic break-up song so it was definitely one of the more challenging songs to write.

What's coming up in the future?

Over the next few months we'll be releasing new songs, doing some shows in the NYC area, then head out to a few other states
