Was there something (an experience) or someone in your life that was the "catalyst" for you to start writing music?
I found an old guitar in my parents garage and I was instantly obsessed. There was always music playing in my house or in my mother's car. Guitar playing and songwriting has been a constant in my life. I can't get enough of either.
Let's get this out of the way. What is the CRAZIEST thing that has ever happened to you in your music career?
There have been so many really insane events. I could and might write a book on those events but instead I will say the craziest thing I have experienced in my career is the constant support of my fans, industry peers and management. There have been so many highs and lows but I don't remember a time that I was facing a hill and someone didn't show up to help me climb it.
What has been the high point of your music path?
Releasing my 6th record and experiencing the reception and love that I hoped for. I have been blessed with so many wonderful gifts and support from equipment companies, friends, family, and industry folks that I could never thank them enough for helping me to travel that path I have been on.
So, how do you approach songwriting or what is your creative process like?
I write all of the time. It might be a full song or a snippet. I love to catalog most of my ideas and reference them when I need inspiration. I am constantly in the studio and or playing live so I always have fresh ideas. I love to just grab a guitar when the spirit moves me and see what comes out. I also spend quite a bit of time writing for upcoming artists that need help finishing their songs. ..... so in a nutshell...... I am always in writing mode.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Indie Artists today? Or, if you could ask the music industry to change one thing, what would it be?
The biggest challenge I see is that there are soooooo many artists. But one of the great things I see.... is that there is sooooo much opportunity! Indie artists now focus on recording something and spending all of their budget to give it away. Artists need to adapt to the current state of music and then find what works for them to be successful. I would love to see the industry bring back A&R and help shape artists instead of looking to buy a working business model from a new artist. Artists need help with learning how to spend their budgets for the best return. To all artists out there...... please don't just give away your music.
If you could share the stage with one other artist or band, who would it be and why?
I would love to share the stage with James Taylor, Keith Urban, Parker McCollum, or Zac Brown. (The list is too long to tell the truth). I love sharing my talent with anyone.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Or, how do you prepare for a live show?
I like to have an outline of the show ready. Normally the band will warm up with some jams then get down to business to make sure we give the show people want to see. Show business is definitely about the show. You absolutely must have a plan in place before you start.
Pick one song that was your greatest challenge to write. Tell us about it!
I wrote a song called, "Big Hearts with Little Wings." The song poured out of me but I always get emotional when I perform it. The song is about and dedicated to the Sandy Hook shooting victims. Sometimes the challenge isn't writing the song but the performing of the song. My heart breaks for the victims of senseless violence.
What's coming up in the future?
I have a lot of shows scheduled, tons of studio work, and a new release coming in 2023.
